POETRY
Ng Yi-Sheng
PAGI
From the
panthalassic
darks & depthnesses
of yesterdeath, another
surfaces: she-monster, not of sea
but caffeinated sunlight. Sky is wingspan,
gills are broken eyelids, flesh is sambal diamond,
& her whiptail tames the aswang: sting &
shame of decimated night. Now ring
all the clock alarms: time need
never mount
kereta, nor
kalesa.
Lo, she
swims,
shark
like
laser
ray
of
fireball
complete.
By which I mean to say,
the morning is a fish.
And hungry.
Whoever shall she eat?

“Pagi” means “morning” in Malay/Indonesian and “stingray” in Filipino/Tagalog.
